Labetalol combines both selective, competitive alpha1-adrenergic blocking and nonselective, competitive beta-adrenergic blocking activity in a single substance. Labetalol usually is administered intravenously in a loading dose of 20 mg, followed by incremental doses of 20 to 80 mg every 10 minutes until the target blood pressure is achieved or a maximal dose of 300 mg. Metoprolol and labetalol are beta-blockers used to treat high blood pressure. Metoprolol is also used to treat hyperthyroidism, certain heart diseases, and some neurologic conditions, as well as to prevent migraine headaches.

Start with a dose of 100mg labetalol twice a day. Increase the dose at fortnightly intervals if needed and tolerated. Usual dose 200 mg twice daily, increased if necessary up to 800 mg daily in 2 divided doses, to be taken with food, higher doses to be given in 3–4 divided doses. The maximum recommended dose is 2,400 mg daily. Labetalol has been used in a limited number of patients for the management of chronic stable angina pectoris. Use of the drug has been associated with a reduction in the frequency and severity of anginal attacks, a decrease in nitrate dosage, and an increase in exercise tolerance.
